The Gottman Institute is dedicated to supporting relationships in crisis and strengthen happy relationships. The Gottmans Method of Couples Therapy is based on almost 40 years of research in almost every facet of relationships.

The Process

Assessment

This phase aims to understand where your relationship strengths and challenges are, and to inform the therapy process.

Therapy 

This phase is informed by the assessment phase and the direction of therapy jointly agreed on with the couples. The frequency and number of sessions varies from couple to couple and discussed at the end of the assessment phase.

The approach is designed to strengthen relationships by

  • Increasing closeness and intimacy,
  • Change negative conflict patterns
  • Repair past hurts
  • Deepen emotional connection
  • Strengthen shared goals
  • Address how to prevent old patterns of behaviour.

Relapse Prevention

It is not uncommon for old habits to prevail. This is a normal part of change. We will discuss ways to prevent relapse, and also ways to deal with it.

Follow Up

After therapy, one or two sessions are scheduled to see how things are working out after therapy is completed. It gives the couple and psychologist a chance to discuss any issues that arises, and also evaluate what is going well.
